Since 2005 we have been generously supported by
which donates the Champagne for the award presentation,
and contributes £1000 towards the £5,000 prize.
The prize was first awarded in 1956 to Alan Moorehead for Gallipoli, and has been going ever since. Its categories are history, biography, politics and (very occasionally) poetry. The winner receives a first edition copy of Old Men Forget and a cheque for five thousand pounds - one thousand of which is donated by Pol Roger Ltd, who have generously provided the champagne for the award presentation since 2004. The prize for 2008 was won by Martin J. Sherwin and Kai Bird, for their book American Prometheus: The Triumph and Tragedy of J. Robert Oppenheimer. The present judges are Prof. Martin Ceadel, representing the Warden of New College; the biographer Lucy Hughes-Hallett; Frank Callanan, historian and Senior Counsel; and the writer and editor Ariane Bankes.
